From the desk of Gaya Chandrasekaran,
Welcome,
Over the past few decades, financial markets have undergone a series of profound transformations.
Trading floors gave way to electronic markets. Online banking changed how customers interacted with financial institutions. Cloud computing modernised technology infrastructure, while artificial intelligence is now reshaping how firms analyse information and make decisions.
Today, another transition is underway.
Across banking, asset management, market infrastructure and public policy, tokenisation has become one of the most widely discussed topics in financial services.
Major banks are launching pilot programmes. Asset managers are creating tokenised investment funds. Regulators and central banks are exploring new forms of settlement infrastructure. Financial market infrastructures are assessing how distributed ledger technology could improve the movement of assets, cash and collateral.
Yet despite the growing attention, the industry remains in an unusual position.
There is widespread agreement that tokenisation has the potential to improve aspects of financial market infrastructure, but far less agreement about how that transformation will actually happen, how long it will take, or what success ultimately looks like.
For many professionals, this creates an understandable challenge.

Industry announcements appear almost daily. One week the focus is tokenised money market funds. The next, it is stablecoins, digital bonds or central bank initiatives. New terminology emerges constantly, and much of the public discussion concentrates on blockchain technology rather than the underlying business and market infrastructure questions that financial institutions are trying to solve.
This programme was created to provide a clearer perspective.
Rather than viewing tokenisation as another technology trend, we explore it as part of a broader evolution in financial market infrastructure. The focus is not on speculative predictions or technical implementation. Instead, the programme provides a practical framework for understanding why institutions are investing in tokenisation, the challenges they continue to face, and the factors most likely to determine whether adoption reaches institutional scale.
Because ultimately, understanding tokenisation is not about understanding blockchain.
It is about understanding where financial markets may be heading over the next decade.
If you’ve followed developments in tokenisation over the past few years, you’ve probably experienced the same challenge as many professionals across financial services.
Collectively, they can feel difficult to interpret.
What do they actually tell us about the direction of financial markets? Which developments represent genuine progress towards institutional adoption, and which are simply early-stage experimentation? More importantly, what do these announcements mean for professionals working in banking, capital markets and financial services?
Much of the public discussion focuses on individual projects or technologies in isolation. One article explains blockchain. Another discusses smart contracts. A conference presentation highlights a successful pilot. Yet relatively little attention is given to the broader question of how these developments fit together within the existing financial system.
As a result, many professionals are left with knowledge of individual initiatives but without a coherent framework for understanding the market as a whole.
This programme was designed to provide that framework.
Rather than examining tokenisation through the lens of technology alone, we’ll step back and explore the bigger picture. We’ll look at the commercial drivers behind institutional adoption, the operational challenges that remain unresolved, and the economic, regulatory and governance considerations that will ultimately determine whether tokenisation becomes part of mainstream financial market infrastructure.
By the end of the programme, you won’t simply know more about tokenisation.
You’ll have a structured way of thinking about the industry—one that helps you evaluate new developments, understand why institutions are making the decisions they are, and engage confidently in conversations about the future of financial markets.
Why This Programme Takes a Different Approach
Most discussions about tokenisation begin with the technology. They explain blockchain, distributed ledgers, digital assets or smart contracts, before exploring how these technologies might be applied across financial services. While those concepts are undoubtedly important, they only tell part of the story. This programme takes a different starting point.
Rather than asking “How do we tokenise an asset?” we begin by asking “What problem is the financial system actually trying to solve?”
That shift in perspective changes the conversation entirely.
Financial markets are already highly digital. Every day, trillions of pounds move between banks, asset managers, custodians, clearing houses and payment systems. The real challenge is not simply converting an asset into a digital token. It is improving the infrastructure that supports how assets, cash, collateral and information move through the financial system.
Throughout this programme, tokenisation is explored not as a standalone technology, but as part of a much broader evolution in financial market infrastructure. We examine why settlement, liquidity, governance, compliance, interoperability and risk management are becoming central to the discussion, and why these factors will ultimately determine whether tokenisation achieves institutional scale.
This perspective reflects the conclusions of my research into institutional adoption.
Over time, I became increasingly convinced that the industry’s greatest challenge is no longer proving that assets can be tokenised. That has already been demonstrated. The more significant challenge is building the institutional architecture capable of supporting those assets safely, efficiently and at scale.
This is why the programme places as much emphasis on governance as technology, on market structure as innovation, and on practical implementation as future vision.
By the end of the programme, I hope you’ll see tokenisation differently.
Not simply as another financial technology, but as an opportunity to rethink how modern financial markets are designed, connected and operated. Because in my view, the future will not be shaped by tokenising more assets. It will be shaped by building the institutional infrastructure that allows those assets to function effectively.
